Trojan Wrestlers Grab Two Wins at Home

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Anderson wrestling team garnered a pair of wins in its 2011-12 home debut by edging Darton, 22-17 and rolling past Spartanburg Methodist, 29-16 Friday evening at the Abney Athletic Center.

Anderson improved to 2-3 on the young season with the wins, as AU freshman Daniel Haines got the Trojans on the scoreboard against Darton with a strong first period and earned a technical decision by blanking the Cavaliers’ Dametres Ellis, 15-0, to give the Trojans a brief lead.

Darton regained the lead temporarily with a major decision in the 141-pound bout, but Daniel Telhada claimed a dominating major decision past DC’s Terry Harris at 149 pounds and sophomore Nick Giuliette boosted AU’s lead to 15-7 by pinning Chris Antonucci 38 seconds into the second period.

The Cavaliers rallied to claim a 17-15 lead behind three consecutive decisions, but senior Adam Newton used a series of takedowns in the third period to win a 15-7 major decision past Darton’s Jeremiah Henderson and junior Chase Duke came on strong in the final moments to record a 5-2 decision in the heavyweight bout, giving AU the come-from-behind victory.

Anderson gained an early 6-0 lead versus Spartanburg Methodist by taking advantage of a forfeit and never trailed in the match, as the Trojans earned wins in three of the next four bouts to push out to a 19-3 lead. Sophomore Ian Harper posted a 4-2 decision past SMC’s Damien Kennerly, while Telhada won his second match of the day by blanking Nick Bower, 11-0. Anderson’s Giuliette pinned Jonathan Cloud with 1:09 remaining in their 157-pound bout for AU’s third straight win.

But Spartanburg Methodist countered by winning three straight, before AU’s Newton and Duke again closed the match with back-to-back wins.

Anderson will get back in action on Saturday, Nov. 26, when the Trojans square off against Belmont Abbey and Seton Hill on the road in Belmont, N.C. The first match is slated for 10 a.m.
