Bishoff and Jones Named to the AFCU Gold Standard

ANDERSON, S.C. – After earning Female and Male Athlete of the Year honors at the AU Athletics Honors Night last month, senior Whitney Bishoff and junior Denzail Jones have been named to the Anderson Federal Credit Union Gold Standard for their outstanding performances during their respective 2011-12 seasons.
 
Bishoff, who recently competed at the prestigious Penn Relays for the second consecutive year, also earned Female Athlete of the Year honors in 2011. A native of Winder, Ga., Bishoff notched impressive outings in both cross country and track and field over the past academic year, including earning the prestigious NCAA Elite 89 Award at the 2011 NCAA Division II Women’s Cross Country Championships last November, while making her made her third career appearance in the event. The Elite 89 is presented to the student-athlete with the highest cumulative grade-point average participating at the finals site for each of the NCAA’s 89 championships.

She was named First-Team All-South Atlantic Conference after helping lead the women’s cross country team to its second consecutive South Atlantic Conference championship last fall and also earned a spot on the NCAA All-Southeast Region Team.
As a member of the AU track & field team, she set the school record in the 5K and was a member of the school record-setting 4x800 relay team. Bishoff holds the school record in both the 5k, set at the UNC Charlotte Invitational, and the 6k.
 
Jones, a 5-foot-9, 160-pound guard, helped lead the men’s basketball team to the 2012 South Atlantic Conference regular-season title and a school-record 26 wins. He was named to the Division II Bulletin men’s basketball All-America Second Team, Second-Team All-Southeast Region and the SAC Player of the Year after the Trojans made an appearance in their second consecutive NCAA Southeast Region title game and claimed a No. 14 national ranking in the NABC Coaches’ poll.

Anderson posted the most regular-season league wins in SAC history and notched the highest league winning percentage (.944) in conference history, falling just shy of their second consecutive appearance in the Elite Eight.

The Tuscaloosa, Ala., native was named First-Team All-Conference and South Atlantic Conference Tournament MVP  after notching a championship-record 50 points in the double-overtime victory over Newberry in the tournament’s semifinals and tallied a league-record 84 points in three SAC Tournament contests. 
The two-time league SAC Player of the Week led conference in steals, finished fifth in assists and sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio.

Each month, one male and one female student-athlete or teams are honored as the Anderson Federal Credit Union Gold Standard Performers for his or her performance in competition, in the classroom, or in the community.
