Women's Basketball Adds Pair of Transfers
August 20, 2012ANDERSON, S.C. – Adding to a recruiting class already three strong, Anderson University head women’s basketball coach Jim Brunelli has announced the addition of LaKandra Beeks and Paige Whitaker to the Trojans’ roster for 2012-13.
Beeks, a 6-foot post player from Albany, Ga. is expected to add depth inside. She played two seasons for head coach Lea Henry’s Darton College Cavaliers, while appearing in 28 games as a sophomore last season. Beeks averaged 4.3 points and was fourth on the team with 5.2 rebounds per contest.
“LaKandra is an aggressive player on both ends of the floor,” said Brunelli. “She is a hard worker and plays a physical game.”
Whitaker is a 5-foot-9 junior that played two seasons at Lees-McRae and was the Bobcats’ second-leading scorer a year ago, averaging 12.4 points per game on the strength of 42.5 percent shooting, including 37.9 percent (69-of-182) from beyond the arc. The native of Harrisburg, N.C., also averaged 3.1 rebounds a game and dished out 1.6 assists.
Whitaker saw action in 49 contests over the past two seasons for Lees-McRae, while starting 22 games last season. She poured in a career-high 25 points in a 96-61 win past Milligan College last November and reached double figures in the scoring column on 18 occasions.
“Paige will add depth to the guard position,” added Brunelli. “She is a deadly outside shooter that has a great feel for the game. Paige can do a little bit of everything on the offensive end, from driving to score and dish to knocking down pull-up jumpers and deep 3-pointers.”
“Both ladies have the ability to be impact players here at Anderson University, noted Brunelli. “I would like to welcome them both to the Trojan family.”
The pair of juniors will join newcomers Jennifer Monroe, Katie Davis and Madison Floyd.
Anderson hits the hardwood for the first of three exhibition contests at Wake Forest on Oct 29, and opens the regular season with a home contest versus Pfeiffer on Nov. 10.
