SOFTBALL -- FRANCIS MARION BLANKS ANDERSON TWICE
FLORENCE, S.C. – Freshman Serena Lim and junior Jessica Johnson tossed a pair of two-hit shutouts as Francis Marion University swept a season-opening softball doubleheader from Anderson College Sunday afternoon. Lim (1-0) allowed only six base runners in her first career start as FMU took the opener 6-0. Johnson (1-0) struck out 12 and allowed only five base runners as the Patriots won the second game 7-0. FMU (2-0) will play a non-conference doubleheader at Catawba College on Wednesday. Anderson drops to 0-2 on the season. In the opener, FMU took advantage of an error, a hit batter, two walks, and two wild pitches to score three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Patriots added three insurance runs in the fifth frame. Two runs scored on a double by Janine Allen, and then Monica Wofford plated Allen with a sacrifice fly. Anderson junior Ashley Rogers (0-1) took the loss, although she allowed only four hits and struck out eight. No player on either squad in game one had more than one hit. In the second game, Francis Marion senior catcher Jamie Wiggins belted a grand slam home run over the center field fence in the first inning to stake the Patriots to an early 5-0 lead. Shortstop Allie Aleman stroked a run-scoring double and Allen drove home Aleman with a single as the Patriot margin grew to 7-0 in the second inning. Anderson junior Stephanie Griffis (0-1) was tagged with the loss in the nightcap. As in the first contest, no player had more than one hit in the second game
