AUGUSTA, Ga. – The Anderson baseball team suffered its second nonconference setback in as many days with 14-4 loss to Augusta, Wednesday afternoon.
Anderson, which was playing its second straight Peach Belt Conference opponent, slipped to 3-2 on the season. Augusta bounced back after falling to Mars Hill in the nightcap of last Saturday's twin bill to improve to 3-1 on the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Junior Dillon Carpenter was 3-for-4 on the afternoon, with a double and a pair of singles. The Charlotte, N.C., native also drove in two runs. Senior Jackson Strange notched a double and a single in four at-bats, with senior Brandon Odachowski and sophomore Trevor Weisner each adding a pair of singles. Sophomores Will O'Brien and Tyler Berry each recorded their first triples of the season.
Junior left-hander Brent Reynolds (0-1) absorbed the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in 3 2/3 innings of work. He struck out one batter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Carpenter pulled a two-out double down the right-field line in the top of the first inning for the Trojans' first hit of the afternoon, but was stranded, while the Jaguars took advantage of a pair of extra base hits in the opening frame to grab an early 2-0 lead.
AU sliced the deficit in half when Matt Overton and Odachowski opened the second inning with back-to-back singles to center field. Overton then crossed the plate when Weisner singled to right, but it was as close as the Trojans would get as Augusta built its lead to 6-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Jags added two more in the fifth and a solo run in the sixth, before Weisner led off the bottom of the seventh frame with his second single of the afternoon and moved to third when Jackson Strange ripped a two-out double to left. Carpenter followed with a single to center to bring home both runners and get AU within 9-3.
But Augusta put the game out of reach with five runs in the bottom of the eighth, while O'Brien tripled in the top of the ninth to bring home Dalton Shaw with the final run of the game.
• The loss marked AU's fifth game in six days.
• The Jaguars are in the midst of a season-opening 10-game homestand.
• Dillon Carpenter has hit safely in all five games.
Anderson returns to the Electric City for a three-game homestand when the Trojans play host to Alabama Huntsville this weekend. The series is slated to get underway with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader and will wrap up with a single contest on Sunday. First-pitch on both days is slated for 1 p.m.
